I.-  GENERAL INFORMATION
 

GENERAL DATA
Location: The Amazonas region is located north of Lima, capital of the Republic, and its capital is Chachapoyas city.

It has an area of 39,249 km2 and is divided in 7 provinces and 83 districts. The Condor Mountain Range is located in this department.


Annual Average Temperature: 18º C (maximum 18º C and minimum 9º C). The rainy season goes from December to April.

ACCESS
By air: The most advisable route is by air. There are daily departures from Jorge Chavez airport from Lima to Chachapoyas, and every other day to Chiclayo (department of Lambayeque).

HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
During the Inca times, the Sachapuyas culture was developed. They were a great opposition to the Tahuantisuyo empire.
Chachapoyas was founded in 1538 by Alonso de Alvarado.

GASTRONOMY
The typical foods are dishes based on banana, such as: stuffed banana, corn humitas, and rolled meat.

TOURIST OVERVIEW
It has varied natural attractions such as the Pongos (Quechua word meaning “door,” for a clearing amidst mountains) of Rentema and Manseriche. The Pomacocha Lagoon is on the road to San Martin.

At Pre-Hispanic times, several cultures flourished in this region, and the Kuelap fortress is the most representative monument, which is a huge military architectural work.
