GENERAL DATA
Location: The Ancash region limits with the Lima department and is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Marañon River. Its capital is Huaraz city. It is divided in 20 provinces and 185 districts.
It has an area of 35,029 km2 and an altitude of 3,091 m.a.s.l.
Annual Average Temperature: 18ºC. (maximum 18º and minimum 9ºC).The rainy season goes from December to April.
ACCESS
By air: Chartered flights service with an approximate flight duration of 35 minutes.
By land: :The most advisable route is Lima-Pativilca-Huaraz (408 km), a 7-hour trip by car.
HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
A region of rich historical past, it was the cradle of the Chavin culture (approximately 1700 BC). The Chavin de Huantar Archaeological Compound is preserved to date as the most representative monument. Ancash has withstood one of the greatest tragedies of our history. On May 31, 1970, a huge earthquake and landslide occurred and a cataclysm ensued for the village of Yungay.
GASTRONOMY
Its typical dishes are: picante de cuy (guinea pig and chili stew), charqui de chancho (pork jerkies), tamales, jerkies, pachamanca (food cooked underground), humitas, puchero (vegetable and meat soup) and chicharrón con mote (pork cracklings and white corn).
TOURIST OVERVIEW
Currently, due to its archaeological remains, its history and privileged geography with glaciers and snow-capped mountains towering 6,000 meters height, it is one of the most important tourist centers in Peru.
The Huascaran National Park encompasses an area of 340,000 ha in the White Mountain Range, where the highest is Huascaran (6,768 m.a.s.l.). It is also the highest peak in Peru. The Peruvian government declared the area a National Park, and UNESCO appointed it as a Natural Humankind Heritage in 1987. The Chavin Archaeological Compound, discovered by Julio C. Tello in 1919, was declared by UNESCO as Humankind Cultural Heritage in 1985.
